Steven Nicklaus is a Bakersfield native with music in his DNA. Growing up as “that chubby-faced kid in diapers” running around concerts and studios while his father performed with local rock bands, Steven’s passion for music was instilled early — along with his lifelong devotion to KISS that began at age 3. He’s been collecting vinyl since the age of 5, where he would play DJ in his room with his old-school Fisher Price record player. The collection continues to grow almost weekly.
A 2002 Ridgeview High School graduate, Steven has been a fixture in local media since 2003. His versatile career spans play-by-play sports announcing, live news radio, and on-the-street reporting, but music has always remained his true calling. He also co-hosts “The Early Bird Special” weekday mornings from 7-9 AM on our sister-station, ESPN Bakersfield 1230 AM, 101.1 FM.
When he’s not behind the mic, Steven enjoys volunteering with local non- profits, attending concerts, tending to his garden, and cheering on his beloved Miami Dolphins. His proudest roles are as husband to Andrea and father to Ryan, who is carrying on the family’s musical tradition by mastering three different instruments.
